Fascia is a very important part of the body. Fascia is the sheet of fibrous connective tissue that binds and separates muscles and organs. In addition to enveloping the muscles and organs, our fascia provides structural support and protection. It has three layers, starting with the superficial fascia directly under the skin and ending with subserous fascia, deep inside the body. Fascia forms directly under the skin and serves as a strong layer of connective tissue between the skin and muscles underneath it. The deep fascia is densely packed and strong, designed to keep the muscles divided and protected. Trigger points, knots, and connective adhesions are formed in the fascia from injuries, stress, tension, and chronic conditions. Myofascial Release is a technique used by Massage Therapists to effectively stretch and smooth out taught and knotted up fascia. Repetitive, long, smooth strokes are used with little to no cream or lotion. It is important to breath with the movements to decrease pain. During Myofascial Release the Massage Therapist will focus on very specific areas of tension. This can be a very intense experience for the client. Before getting very deep into the layers of fascia around the muscles, we will use gentle pressure and often hydrotherapy to warm up the muscles and prepare them for Myofascial Release. There is often an associated soreness and stiffness following a Myofascial Release treatment. After a
