CranioSacral Therapy: How Can It Help Me?

Check out Peace of Mind Massage’s Taylor Jordan talking about CranioSacral Therapy benefits on FOX31 Denver & Channel 2:

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on healing practice that can benefit anyone and helps a variety of ailments. If you have regular headaches, insomnia, neck and back pain, and other physical issues, we encourage you to consider adding CranioSacral Therapy to your massage session.

What is CranioSacral Therapy?

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a mellow, hands-on healing method that cradles the skull and sacrum in barely detectable ways. CST’s light movements allows therapists to affect the pressure and circulation of the cerebrospinal fluid that surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord.

CST offers a way for therapists to evaluate and enhance the functioning of the CranioSacral system, which is comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid.

“CranioSacral Therapy is so effective because it facilitates our body’s own self-healing,” says Audrey Garber, Licensed Massage Therapist at Peace of Mind Massage.

“We accumulate restrictions in our tissues that interrupt and impede healthy function, including our body’s ability to heal itself,” she says. “Sometimes all it takes is a little support in the right place to take the pressure off and our body can realign itself and release those restrictions.”

CST was developed by Osteopathic Physician John E. Upledger after years of clinical testing and research at Michigan State University where he served as a biomechanics professor.

CST helps the following conditions:

  • Migraines and Headaches
  • Chronic Neck and Back Pain
  • Autism
  • Stress and Tension-Related Disorders
  • Motor-Coordination Impairments
  • Infant and Childhood Disorders
  • Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Fibromyalgia
  • TMJ Syndrome
  • Central Nervous System Disorders
  • ADD/ADHD
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • And Many Other Conditions

“It is unlike any other massage modality, as it does ask the practitioner to not force the tissue, but to allow the tissue to move as it needs to,” explains Andrea Adams, a Peace of Mind LMT.

She recently attended a 4-day CranioSacral Therapy training in Albuquerque, NM with co-worker Audrey Garber.

After receiving specialized CST from Andrea that targets ocular motor issues, Audrey discovered she no longer suffers from night blindness.

“For years, I’d taken it for granted that I couldn’t drive at night because my vision was so impaired,” explains Audrey.

“During practice on our second day at the CranioSacral Therapy workshop in Albuquerque, Andrea released my sphenoid (a butterfly-shaped bone in the middle of the skull) that had been compressing my optic nerve. Honestly, my left eye felt kind of weird while it was happening! My vision got a little fuzzy on my left side and by the next evening I could see at night!”

Audrey asks all her clients to give CST a try.

She also hopes clients trust their bodyworker enough to tell them about issues or imbalances they may be experiencing no matter how small or seemingly unrelated.

“Things we assume are permanent maybe don’t have to be — especially for chronic conditions, issues people have been living with for years, and problems that haven’t been resolved by other therapies — CranioSacral Therapy can be the missing key. At worst, people get to enjoy a really relaxing session and leave feeling fantastic!”

How does it feel?

Some clients describe a “rocking sensation” — similar to feeling waves on a boat. Unbalanced cerebral fluid can show up in a multitude of ways in the human body. For some, they may feel fatigue or muscles soreness; others may have insomnia or chronic stress. The goal is to release it and have a “lighter” feeling upon getting up from the massage table.

Do I disrobe?

Unlike traditional massage, clients can stay dressed for an entire CranioSacral Therapy session.
