Thai massage emerged from Thailand and made it’s way the United States about 50 years ago. While the common word association with Thai Massage is “stretching,” the modality goes much deeper and is based on many more principles. The Thai people drew their inspiration from ancient indigenous practices, Theraveda Buddhism, Ayurveda (ancient nutrition and body balancing from India), Hatha Yoga and Chinese medicine.Thai massage follows a series of energy lines in the body called Sen lines, which can be likened to the meridians of Chinese medicine. Though they are “energy” lines, the work is deep and intense and the client is asked to breathe deeply while the practitioner clears the lines. After the Sen lines are worked, the practitioner mobilizes the client’s joints. Elbows, wrists, knees, hips, and even fingers and toes! Then comes the deep stretching. There are different levels of the stretches depending on the range of motion and flexibility of the client, but they are meant to create change, so they will likely take the client to their edge and slightly beyond. The client is clothed for the entirety of the session, which allows for freer movement and more dynamic stretching. Afterword, there is a “cool down” series that involves sumptuous ear, face and scalp massage. The Denver Massage practitioner bows to the client, sealing the intention of providing healing and Metta, Buddhist word for “loving-kindness.” The client is left feeling longer, more relaxed and integrated.
Ashiatsu is a deep tissue modality applied with the therapist’s feet. Shi-atsu directly translates to mean “hand” and “pressure”. Ashi-atsu means “foot pressure”. This modality was inspired by many forms of massage indigenous to Asia, but was founded by Denver local, Ruthee Hardee. For this modality, bars are mounted to the ceiling for the therapist to grasp for balance. Gliding strokes are used with the foot and deeper, slightly more specific pressure is given with the heel. The foot is much broader and softer than the hand, as is the heel than the elbow. This way, the therapist can access several muscles at once, allowing the session to be seamless and very comfortable to receive. The pressure is controlled by the therapist’s ability to manipulate their weight and use the bars to either ease up or go deeper. This broad way to receive deep tissue is an excellent way to integrate a client who doesn’t enjoy the feel of thumbs and elbows. But it may not be ideal for deep tissue die-hards who prefer some pain and gain.
As with all massage modalities, these services come with some contraindications. If you have had disc surgery or joint issues you may want to try one of our many other modalities.
